Auto Glass Care After Windshield Replacement or Repair
Getting your windshield replaced or repaired is an investment in your vehicle's safety and structural integrity. Following the right aftercare steps ensures the adhesive cures properly, the seal holds, and your new glass lasts for years to come.
Immediately After Replacement (First 30–60 Minutes)
- Don't drive immediately. Chambers Auto Glass uses SikaTack Mach 30 adhesive with a 30-minute minimum drive-away time. Wait the full recommended period before moving the vehicle.
- Leave the retention tape on. Any tape applied by your technician holds the molding in place while the adhesive sets. Leave it for at least 24 hours.
- Don't remove the rearview mirror. If it was detached during installation, wait 24 hours before reattaching it.
First 24 Hours
- Keep a window cracked. Leave one window slightly open to equalize air pressure and reduce stress on the fresh seal when opening and closing doors.
- Close doors gently. The pressure wave from a slammed door can stress the adhesive before it fully cures.
- Avoid car washes. High-pressure water can compromise the seal. Hand washing is acceptable after 24 hours, but avoid automated car washes.
- Park in the shade if possible. Extreme heat can affect adhesive curing in the first 24 hours.
First 48 Hours
- Avoid automated car washes. Wait a full 48 hours before using any car wash with high-pressure water or brushes.
- Avoid off-road driving. Rough terrain creates vibration and stress on the new seal before it's fully cured.
After the Adhesive Has Fully Cured
Once the adhesive has fully cured (typically 24–48 hours), your windshield is ready for normal use. Here's how to keep it in top condition long-term:
- Clean the glass regularly with an ammonia-free automotive glass cleaner and microfiber cloths.
- Replace wiper blades every 6–12 months — worn blades can scratch glass and reduce visibility.
- Address new chips immediately — a $55 repair today prevents a $300+ replacement tomorrow.
- Avoid parking directly under trees where sap and bird droppings can etch the glass surface.
