DIY: How To Clean The Interior Of Auto Glass Windshield

How To Clean The Interior Of Auto Glass Windshield

How To Clean The Interior Of Your Auto Glass Windshield

The inside of your windshield is often the most neglected surface in a car — and the hardest to clean. That hazy, greasy film that builds up on the interior glass is caused by off-gassing from plastics and vinyl in your dashboard, combined with dust, smoke, and fingerprints. Here's how to tackle it properly.

Why Interior Glass Gets So Dirty

New vehicles especially are prone to interior windshield haze. The plastics, vinyl, and foam in your dashboard release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that deposit a greasy film on the inside of your glass. This film scatters light and dramatically reduces visibility — especially when driving toward the sun or oncoming headlights at night.

What You'll Need

  • Ammonia-free automotive glass cleaner
  • Two clean microfiber cloths
  • A long-handled glass cleaning tool (optional, but very helpful for reaching the bottom of the windshield)

Step-by-Step Interior Windshield Cleaning

  1. Park in the shade. Direct sunlight causes cleaner to evaporate before you can wipe it, leaving streaks.
  2. Wipe down first with a dry cloth. Remove loose dust before applying any liquid cleaner.
  3. Apply cleaner to your cloth — not the glass. Spraying directly onto the interior glass risks overspray on your dashboard and electronics.
  4. Wipe in circular motions first. This breaks up the greasy film more effectively than straight strokes.
  5. Follow up with straight strokes. Horizontal then vertical to catch any remaining haze.
  6. Buff dry immediately. Use a second clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove all residue before it dries.

The Tricky Bottom Edge

The lower portion of the interior windshield — near the dashboard — is notoriously difficult to reach. A long-handled glass cleaning tool with a pivoting head makes this much easier. Wrap a microfiber cloth around the head and you can reach the entire glass surface without contorting yourself.

How Often Should You Clean Interior Glass?

In Alabama's heat, dashboard off-gassing is accelerated, meaning interior glass haze builds up faster than in cooler climates. Plan to clean the interior of your windshield every 4–6 weeks, or whenever you notice reduced visibility.
