2019 Guide To Auto Glass - The Rear Windshield

The Complete Guide to the Rear Windshield

Most drivers know a lot about their front windshield — but the rear windshield is equally important and often misunderstood. This guide covers everything you need to know about rear windshields: how they're made, what can go wrong, and what to expect from a replacement.

How Rear Windshields Differ From Front Windshields

Front and rear windshields are made differently for good reason:

  • Front windshields are laminated glass — two layers of glass bonded together with a plastic interlayer (PVB). When laminated glass breaks, it holds together in a spiderweb pattern rather than shattering into sharp pieces.
  • Rear windshields are typically tempered glass — a single layer of glass that has been heat-treated to be 4–5 times stronger than standard glass. When tempered glass breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pebbles rather than sharp shards.

The Rear Defroster

Most rear windshields have a built-in defroster — those thin horizontal lines you see across the glass. These are actually thin wires embedded in or printed onto the glass surface that heat up when you activate the rear defroster. During replacement, these connections must be carefully preserved and reconnected. Chambers Auto Glass technicians are trained to handle rear defroster connections properly.

Can a Rear Windshield Be Repaired?

Unlike front windshields, rear windshields generally cannot be repaired — they must be replaced. Because rear glass is tempered rather than laminated, any significant crack or break compromises the entire structural integrity of the glass. There is no repair resin that can restore tempered glass to its original strength.

What Causes Rear Windshield Damage?

  • Impact from road debris — rocks and gravel kicked up by other vehicles
  • Vandalism — unfortunately common in some areas
  • Thermal stress — extreme temperature changes, especially using hot water to defrost in winter
  • Improper defroster use — using the defroster on a very cold windshield can cause thermal shock
  • Accidents — rear-end collisions frequently damage the rear glass

What to Expect During Rear Windshield Replacement

  1. The broken glass is carefully removed and the frame is cleaned.
  2. New OEM-quality tempered glass is fitted and bonded with automotive adhesive.
  3. The rear defroster connections are reattached and tested.
  4. The installation is inspected for proper seal and fit.

The process typically takes 1–2 hours. Chambers Auto Glass performs all rear windshield replacements on-site at your location — no towing required.
